Master the Art of Washable Glue Resist for Collage

Watch HERE!

This technique offers a fresh twist on the traditional glue resist paper I’ve shared before. I’d like to give a special thanks to artist Jane Dunnewold, whose demo inspired me to try it myself. While I’ve added a few personal touches, the core method is hers.

For this demo, the supplies are quite specific: 1. Watercolor paper (either cold press or hot press). The difference is that cold press has a textured surface while the hot press is smooth, and both work for this technique. 2. Washable glue – clear or white, but it must be washable. Regular glue won’t work because it won’t wash off, which would defeat the purpose of this technique. 3. India ink that is carbon-based. This is crucial for the best results. I’ve tried other types of India ink, but only the carbon-based variety provides the crisp, dark look that I’m aiming for. 4. Optional: Bristol paper or heavyweight mixed media paper around 184 pounds if you don’t have watercolor paper.

How to Create Washable Glue Resist Collage Papers:
1. Apply the Glue: Start by drawing swirls or patterns with washable glue on your watercolor paper. Keep the application thin to speed up drying and make it easier to wash off later.
2. Let It Dry: Once the glue is fully dry, it’s time to add the ink.
3. Apply India Ink: Pour a small amount of carbon-based India ink onto the paper and brush it out, ensuring the glue resist areas are covered. Let the ink dry – which happens fairly quickly.
4. Remove the Glue: Here’s where it gets exciting! Submerge the paper in very hot water and gently rub the glue off with a sea sponge or under warm running water. Be careful to avoid scrubbing the ink off, focusing only on removing the glue. The goal is to reveal the texture of the paper beneath while keeping the inked design intact.

As the glue washes away, you’ll see crisp, defined lines where the resist areas were.

And that’s it! You now have a stunning set of washable glue-resistant papers, perfect for adding unique textures and designs to your collages.
