Create Beautiful Collage Papers Using Simple Bathroom Tiles

How to use bathroom tiles from the hardware store to create collage papers

Love collage but have papers you’re not crazy about? Here’s the solution – Tiles from the hardware store, one of my favorite layering techniques.

Start by buying a single sheet of tile without the grout in it. This allows you to create various patterns, particularly when you layer small tiles over larger tiles.

This is a phenomenal way to add layers to papers you may not like as much. Or, you can start from scratch by using tiles as your first and second layers, adding layers with different colors and shapes on top of each other until you have something very multidimensional.

Something I mentioned in the video is to use colors that are close to each other on the color wheel. This ensures that the layers blend beautifully and still stand out.

I’ve already made a set of papers using my cool colors with this technique, so I thought I’d improve some of my warm-colored papers that I’m not as enamored with. By adding a layer of tile on top of them, I am elevating the piece and redesigning it into something that might make me more excited to use that collage paper in a future collage.

Luckily, acrylic paint comes right off the tile with a little scrubbing using a hard sponge, allowing you to use the tiles over and over again with different colors.

Fun tip: Tiles on a book page can be incredibly effective element in a collage!

With collage paper making, you can transform papers that don’t grab you into something truly impressive. I love the freedom and joy it brings me to see the transformation—papers that once didn’t grab my attention now make me say, “Wow, how did I make that?”
